Jewelry production starts with product development. A host of jewelry making tools and jewelry making kits are used in the process. This stage includes manual designing and CAD (Computer-Aided Designing) designing. A Manual jewelry designing kits are used by jewelry designers to create the idea and the concept for their next jewelry masterpiece. The manual designing process involves sketching out ideas on paper or using specialized jewelry design software. CAD designing, on the other hand, involves using jewelry making tools or computer software to create three-dimensional models of jewelry designs. Popular jewelry designing software include Rhino, Matrix and Zbrush.
3D Printing or CAM (Computer Aided Manufacturing)
Once the design is finalized, the next step is to create a physical model of the jewelry. 3D printing or CAM (Computer-Aided Manufacturing) is used to create these models. The work of a jewelry artisan has drastically reduced due to the advent of 3D technology. Jewelry making materials such as wax, resin, or plasti02c are used to create a three-dimensional model of the jewelry design.
Wax Tree Making
The next step in jewelry production is wax tree making. The 3D printed model is used to create a mold made of high-temperature-resistant materials. The mold is then filled with wax to create a wax model of the jewelry design. Several wax models are attached to a wax tree to create a larger wax model. In some occassions, especially when using advanced 3D printers, the 3D model is already printed in wax which can be used to create the wax tree directly.
Once the wax tree is created, the next step is to cast the jewelry. The wax tree is covered in a heat-resistant plaster material to create a mold. The mold is then heated to melt the wax, leaving a cavity in the shape of the jewelry design. Molten metal, such as gold or silver, is poured into the mold to create the final piece of jewelry.
After casting, the jewelry is removed from the mold and cleaned. Polishing is done to give the jewelry a smooth and shiny finish. Jewelry making tools such as polishing wheels and buffing tools are used to remove any rough spots and create a smooth surface.
Diamond and Gems Setting
Diamonds and gemstones are then set into the jewelry. Jewelry settings such as prongs or bezels are used to hold the stones in place. These settings are created in advance using the CAD jewelry tools itself in the above process. Skilled craftsmen use specialized jewelry making tools to set the stones carefully into the piece. Complex shapes can be set in jewelry with the help of several types of settings.
Final Polishing and Buffing
The final step in jewelry production is final polishing and buffing. This step is essential to give the jewelry a perfect finish. Buffing tools are used to create a shiny and glossy finished surface.
