J K Diamonds Institute of Gems & Jewelry organized a Study Tour to Sri Lanka for Diamonds, Gemstones, and CAD Students in May 2025
In an effort to provide practical exposure and global insights into the gems and jewelry industry, J K Diamonds Institute of Gems & Jewelry organized an exclusive Study Tour to Sri Lanka from 18th to 23rd May 2025 for students of Diamonds, Gemstones, and Jewelry Design (CAD). The tour aimed to offer an immersive learning experience by combining academic enrichment with real-world exposure to gemstone markets, mining, treatments, and international trade regulations.
The tour commenced on Sunday, 18th May 2025, as students departed from Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport and landed at Colombo’s Bandaranaike International Airport, ready to begin an enlightening journey into the world of gemstones.
Day 1: Rakwana – Unveiling the Origins of Gemstones
The first stop was Rakwana, where students explored a bustling gem market brimming with natural treasures. A guided tour of local gem mines provided hands-on insight into mining practices, offering a unique opportunity to witness how gemstones are extracted from the earth. The day concluded with a zircon treatment session, where students learned about enhancement techniques used to elevate gem quality.
Day 2: Ratnapura – The City of Gems
The second day took the students to Ratnapura, known globally as the ‘City of Gems’. Here, they engaged in a deep dive into the local gem market and observed live gem-cutting demonstrations by skilled artisans. A dedicated session on sapphire treatment methods further enriched their understanding of gemstone enhancement.
Day 3: Ratnapura to Beruwala – Heritage Meets Learning
Students continued their gem market exploration in Ratnapura before visiting a Gem Museum, which showcased the rich history and diverse types of gemstones found in Sri Lanka. The group then travelled to Beruwala by night, gearing up for the next leg of their journey.
Day 4: Beruwala – Technology and Trade
In Beruwala, students explored the local gem trading hub and visited a Gem Lab, where they learned about advanced gem testing techniques and certification processes. They also got the opportunity to learn practically about the Pit mining process, gaining firsthand knowledge of one of the most common mining techniques used in Sri Lanka.
Day 5: Beruwala & National Gem Authority – The Final Chapter
The final day featured one last visit to the Beruwala gem market for final observations and purchases. Students then visited the National Gem Authority, where they gained valuable insights into government regulations, export procedures, and the legal framework surrounding gem certification in Sri Lanka.
The day concluded with an interactive Q&A session with a guest speaker and a Sri Lankan authority member, offering students a chance to clarify doubts and deepen their understanding of the global gem trade.
This was followed by a felicitation and convocation ceremony, where each student was honored with a course completion certificate issued by J K Diamonds Institute of Gems & Jewelry, marking the successful culmination of their educational journey through this immersive international study tour.
The study tour concluded with the return journey from Colombo to Mumbai on Friday, 23rd May 2025. Students carried back with them not just memories, but practical knowledge and international exposure that would significantly contribute to their careers in the gems and jewelry industry.
Under the mentorship of our Director, Mr. Jaynil Ajmera, students also learnt the art of buying, negotiating, and bargaining gemstone stock in real-world markets—a skill critical for success in the gems and jewelry trade.
Additionally, students built valuable connections with vendors and suppliers, relationships that will prove crucial for future business opportunities and collaborations.
